2 x Grammy, 12x Latin Grammy winning recording artist/producer Carlos Vives was awarded a Master of Latin Music degree by the prestigious Berklee College of Music at a ceremony at the GML Auditorio (Gaira Music Local, Vives’ venue) in Bogota, Colombia. The award was presented by Berklee president Roger Brown and was followed by a performance of music from Berklee students and Vives at the Julio Mario Santodomingo Theater. The Massachusetts-based Berklee College of Music is the largest private music college in the country and boasts a highly regarded Latin Music Studies program.
Grammy-winning Ozomatli will release an album of classic and contemporary Mexican hits reimagined with a dancehall reggae feel, on May 5, 2017, on Cleopatra Records. Produced by drum & bass reggae legends Sly & Robbie (Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Peter Tosh, Jimmy Cliff, Madonna, No Doubt), Ozo invited friends Gaby Moreno, Juanes, Regulo Caro, Chali 2na, G.Love, Slightly Stoopied and Herb Alpert to perform songs written by Selena, Café Tacuba, Juan Gabriel, Julieta Venegas, Los Tigres del Norte and classic tracks from their youth. The album is Ozomatli’s first album of mostly Spanish language music in their 21-year history. See tracks below.
Strange Music, the world’s largest independent rap label, has released its first pop/alt single from Chicago/Kansas City pop/alternative band ABOVE WAVES. “Simple Things” is a contagious mid-tempo pop gem, with infectious lyrics sung by lead vocalist Ryan Bradley, driven by the underlying rhythms of drummer Lance Bennet and bassist Bryan Walker, topped with Colin Greshock’s lead guitar. “Simple Things” is on the band’s upcoming album Fugitives, which is slated for a September 2017 release.

Michael Jackson’s Thriller has become the first album in RIAA Gold & Platinum Program history to be certified 33x Diamond for United States sales and streams, it was announced by the Recording Industry of America (RIAA), the Estate of Michael Jackson, Epic Records and Legacy Recordings (the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment). Thriller is still the ONLY album ever to have surpassed the RIAA’s 30x million mark in U.S. sales.
