Howard Weitzman, Entertainment Power Attorney, Dies

Howard Weitzman, 81, who for over half a century has been one of the most influential and successful attorneys in America, died this week in Pacific Palisades, CA, after a short illness. His is survived by his beloved wife Margaret Weitzman, Jed and Armen Weitzman.
A veteran of numerous front-page trials, Mr. Weitzman is renowned for his fearlessness in challenging government agents and adversaries.  His clients have included every major motion picture studio, talent agencies William Morris, ICM and CAA, and many high-profile clients including John DeLorean, Michael Jackson, Marlon Brando, Morgan Freeman, Magic Johnson, O. J. Simpson, Sugar Ray Leonard, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Justin Bieber, Ivan Reitman, Ozzy Osbourne, Sean Combs, Ron Meyer, Morgan Freeman and Chuck Lorre, amongst others. Weitzman has represented the Estate of Michael Jackson since its inception.
Weitzman virtually pioneered the courtroom steps press conference during his defense of DeLorean in 1984. “He helpfully puts his more obscure courtroom questions into context, indicates his current strategy and delivers small homilies on the dangers of a government entrapment operation gone wild,” wrote the Washington Post at the time. Weitzman’s congeniality and quotability earned him the affection and respect of the media throughout his career.
Howard Weitzman was born in Los Angeles and worked in his parents’ grocery business.  Those beginnings gave him the ability to speak to anyone.  As a youth, he pursued a career in baseball and played second base for a team that won the national college championship in 1961.  After attending Los Angeles City College, a major league career seemed unlikely, so he took a friend’s suggestion to try USC Law School.
A founding partner at Kinsella Weitzman Iser Kump LLP, Weitzman has been the lead trial attorney in over 300 civil and criminal jury trials. He has represented over 1,000 individuals and companies on matters ranging from intellectual property and entertainment issues to family law and estate issues.  From 1995-1998, Mr. Weitzman served as Vice President of Corporate Operations for Universal Studios.
Mr. Weitzman taught Trial Advocacy at the University of Southern California Law School for 12 years. He has lectured at Harvard, Georgetown Law Center, UCLA and numerous other law schools across the nation, and has been a speaker at countless seminars and symposiums for Bar Associations and conferences. He is been perennially named a “Power Lawyer” by The Hollywood Reporter and in Variety’s “Legal Impact Report.”. He has been a guest on many national television shows, including “CBS This Morning”, “Dateline,” and “Good Morning America.
He has twice received the Jerry Geisler Memorial Award as the outstanding trial lawyer in Los Angeles County. He has been profiled in numerous publications and was named one of the top fifteen lawyers in the country by The National Law Journal.

GONE WEST (FEATURING COLBIE CAILLAT) NEW VIDEO “I’M NEVER GETTING OVER YOU” IS THEIR FAREWELL TO FANS

WATCH: HERE

Nashville, October 2, 2020 – GONE WEST, 2x Grammy-winner and multi-platinum recording artist Colbie Caillat, multiplatinum songwriter, Grammy winning songwriter Jason Reeves, Hawaiian recording artist Justin Kawika Young (11 #1s in Hawaii) and Academy of Country Music and CMT Award nominee Nelly Joy, today released the video for “I’m Never Getting Over You”,  just a month after disbanding the group they forged out of their musical friendship three years ago. The video premiered earlier this week on SiriusXM’s The Highway, thanks to program director JR Schumann, a longtime supporter of the project.

“This is one of our favorites tracks from Canyons,” said the band.  “The music we made together has meant so much to us, we wanted our fans to share this memory of what we accomplished with our music and with their support. It is our farewell video.”
Filmed in an almost sculptural black and white by Director Patrick Tracy, the setting features Caillat and Young (who announced the end of their engagement earlier this year) stage front singing intimately to one another about moving forward after the heartbreak of a broken relationship while Reeves and Joy play piano and guitar behind them.
“I’m Never Getting Over You” was originally written by Reeves, Caillat and Liz Rose for Caillat’s Gypsy Heart album,  lyrics like “time is a broken heart’s best friend” “I want the end to be easier than the start” take on new meaning in light of Caillat & Young’s breakup and the band’s disbanding in this version, produced by Jamie Kinney and written by Caillat, Reeves, Liz Rose, Young and Joy. The track, which Associated Press called “achingly heartbreaking”, is from the band’s acclaimed debut album Canyons.

Avicii Birthday Tribute for Mental Health Awareness to Take Over SiriusXM’s BPM Channel During Suicide Prevention Week

The Tim Bergling Foundation and SiriusXM to honor Avicii with specialty programming including a never-before-heard Avicii set and more starting Tuesday, September 8
NEW YORK – September 2, 2020 – SiriusXM and The Tim Bergling Foundation today announced BPM Presents: Avicii Birthday Tribute for Mental Health Awareness on SiriusXM’s BPM channel. The special take-over will kick off on Tuesday September 8, Avicii’s birthday and during Suicide Prevention Week.
BPM Presents: Avicii Birthday Tribute for Mental Health Awareness will feature specialty programming including one never-before-heard Avicii (aka Tim Bergling) set. Until now, his June 2016 set in Osaka, Japan was only heard by those in attendance. For the first time, the set will broadcast exclusively to SiriusXM’s listeners, as well as interviews from the 2019 Avicii Tribute Concert in Stockholm, Sweden. Klas Bergling, Tim’s father, will sit down for an exclusive interview to discuss Tim’s life and music and the mission of the Foundation, which is to prevent suicide and remove the stigma attached to mental illness.
“Anki and I want to thank Geronimo and SiriusXM for their continued support of Tim’s music and for taking this time to put a spotlight on the global issue of mental health,” said Klas Bergling. “We want to encourage Tim’s fans and all young people to know that they are not alone.  It’s important to talk to someone, a friend or family member or workmate.  There is help for any emotional struggle they or their friends may have.”
“SiriusXM championed Avicii from his start and we hope his fans will join us in celebrating him and his music as we take this special week to premiere a never-before-heard set, play music spanning his career, and hear about the importance of mental health wellness from those who knew him best,” said Scott Greenstein, SiriusXM’s President and Chief Content Officer. “We are honored to work with The Tim Bergling Foundation to spotlight the issue of mental health, while also celebrating Avicii’s legacy through his music.”
“The loss of Tim was personal for me,” said Geronimo, SiriusXM’s Vice President of Dance and EDM Programming. “Tim was my friend and like many fans around the world, I was excited to watch his career grow exponentially.  I’m honored to work with his father, Klas and his family, to bring awareness to mental health and how asking for help is equally as important. The world has changed so quickly due to the pandemic, so this topic is more crucial now than ever.”
The take-over will also feature music from Avicii all weeklong and commentary from artists including Aloe Blacc, Armin van Buuren, Bonn, David Guetta, Joe Janiak, Laidback Luke, Martin Garrix, Nicky Romero, Nile Rodgers, Rita Ora, Sandro Cavazza, Zak Abel and more discussing Avicii, as well as sharing personal stories about Tim, his music and their experience with mental illness. Additionally, the channel take-over will include a special broadcast of Avicii’s SiriusXM Town Hall from 2013.
SiriusXM’s first-ever Avicii Birthday Tribute for Mental Health Awareness Week will benefit Vibrant Health’s National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.  John Draper, PHD, Executive Director of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, will share advice and resources on SiriusXM’s Doctor Radio for listeners experiencing emotional distress or struggling with thoughts of suicide.

The following factors, among others, could cause actual results and the timing of events to differ materially from the anticipated results or other expectations expressed in the forward-looking statements:  the current coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is adversely impacting our business; our substantial competition that is likely to increase over time; our efforts to attract and retain subscribers and listeners, or convert listeners into subscribers, which may not be successful, and may adversely affect our business; our Pandora ad-supported business has suffered a loss of monthly active users, which may adversely affect our Pandora business; privacy and data security laws and regulations may hinder our ability to market our services, sell advertising and impose legal liabilities; we engage in extensive marketing efforts and the continued effectiveness of those efforts are an important part of our business; consumer protection laws and our failure to comply with them could damage our business; a substantial number of our Sirius XM subscribers periodically cancel their subscriptions and we cannot predict how successful we will be at retaining customers; our ability to profitably attract and retain subscribers to our Sirius XM service as our marketing efforts reach more price-sensitive consumers is uncertain; our failure to convince advertisers of the benefits of our Pandora ad-supported service could harm our business; if we are unable to maintain revenue growth from our advertising products, particularly in mobile advertising, our results of operations will be adversely affected; economic conditions, including advertising budgets and discretionary spending, may adversely affect our business and operating results; if we are unable to attract and retain qualified personnel, our business could be harmed; we may not realize the benefits of acquisitions or other strategic investments and initiatives, including the acquisition of Pandora; our use of pre-1972 sound recordings on our Pandora service could result in additional costs; we may from time to time modify our business plan, and these changes could adversely affect us and our financial condition; we have a significant amount of indebtedness, and our debt contains certain covenants that restrict our operations; our facilities could be damaged by natural catastrophes or terrorist activities; the unfavorable outcome of pending or future litigation could have an adverse impact on our operations and financial condition; failure to protect our intellectual property or actions by third parties to enforce their intellectual property rights could substantially harm our business and operating results; some of our services and technologies may use “open source” software, which may restrict how we use or distribute our services or require that we release the source code subject to those licenses; rapid technological and industry changes and new entrants could adversely impact our services; existing or future laws and regulations could harm our business; we may be exposed to liabilities that other entertainment service providers would not customarily be subject to; SPIKE LEE COMMEMORATES MICHAEL JACKSON’S BIRTHDAY WITH ‘THEY DON’T CARE ABOUT US (2020)”

SPIKE LEE COMMEMORATES MICHAEL JACKSON’S BIRTHDAY WITH
‘THEY DON’T CARE ABOUT US (2020)” SHORT FILM USING FOOTAGE FROM GLOBAL PROTESTS OVER RACIAL INEQUALITY
“Great protest songs can’t get old, stale or non-relevant because the struggle still continues,” says Lee.
Director Spike Lee yesterday revealed a new version of Michael Jackson’s “They Don’t Care About Us” short film during his annual Brooklyn Loves Michael Jackson block party celebrating the King of Pop’s birthday, which this year took place virtually.
LINK TO VIDEO: HERE
“Great protest songs can’t get old, stale or non-relevant because the struggle still continues,” he said.  “That’s why THEY DON’T REALLY CARE ABOUT US is the anthem during this chaotic, pandemic world we are living in.” (See full statement below.)

“They Don’t Care About Us (2020)” incorporates scenes from the original two short films for the “HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I” single (one filmed in Brazil and one set in prison examining police brutality) with footage from protests which took place all over the world including cities such as Osaka, Helsinki, Paris, Madrid, Atlanta, NYC, Tel Aviv, Rafah, Brooklyn, Tunis, London, Rio de Janeiro, Cape Town, Toronto, Kenosha, Melbourne, Chicago and many more.

Lee’s full statement:
“They Don’t Care About Us” was written and composed and produced by Michael Jackson who said of the track, “The song in fact is about the pain of prejudice and hate and is a way to draw attention to social and political problems.” One reporter wrote “(the song) is a brilliant, politically potent, street inspired rap-pop hybrid.  It became a song that not only resonated for the disenfranchised in America but also for those around the world.”

Avicii Experience – opening in Stockholm in 2021

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, June 9, 2020; Avicii Experience is a tribute museum opening to fans and the public in Stockholm, Sweden, next year. Avicii Experience will be an intensively emotional tribute to one of the true icons of modern popular culture.

Avicii Experience will be an immersive interactive exhibition that will bring its visitors closer to the artist Avicii and the person Tim Bergling. The audience will follow Tim’s journey from a reclusive music nerd to a celebrated superstar, from his boyhood room where it all started to the Los Angeles studio where the biggest hits were created. The museum will include memorabilia, unseen photos and video, plus published and unpublished music.
(Space, a contemporary digital culture center and
Europe’s largest permanent esport and gaming venue)

In December 2019 Billboard listed the top moments that defined the EDM decade. Avicii’s meteoric rise claimed the first spot, creating a template for EDM superstardom. “Avicii left behind a legacy of transforming modern dance music and pioneering a revolution of the EDM scene that spread across multiple genres, leading him to become one of the most influential producers, performers and songwriters of our time,” says Per Sundin, CEO of Pophouse Entertainment Group and co-founder of Avicii Experience. The legendary disco hit-maker Nile Rodgers, who changed the course of modern dance music with his band Chic, and collaborated closely with Avicii said this: “Avicii has quite rightly been celebrated as one of the greatest DJ’s of all time and as an important artist who made massively successful records but what I will remember the most is that Tim was one of the finest songwriters I ever worked with. We could work together for 24 hours a day and his melodic ideas would never stop coming. He was a melodic beast who has not as yet had the recognition he deserves for his extraordinary talent. Tim, I love and miss you my friend!”

At Avicii Experience visitors will be able to peer inside the creative process and the many collaborations behind the music. Previously unreleased material that was the foundation for the posthumous album “Tim” will be made available for the first time as will unpublished early versions of the breakthrough hit song ‘Levels’.

The artist Aloe Blacc co-wrote the mega hit ‘Wake Me Up’ in collaboration with Avicii and Mike Einziger said, “Tim was a musical genius. He was boundless and incredibly driven in his creativity. He had the ability to unite people with his music. I’m certain that with his fans’ memories his legacy will last forever.”

Avicii Experience is a part of SPACE, a new and unique concept combining gaming, music, and content creation, the key ingredients of digital culture, all under one roof. SPACE is set to open in Stockholm, Sweden in 2021 at Sergels torg in the city center.

A portion of the revenues from Avicii Experience will go to the Tim Bergling Foundation. “At SPACE we will carry out activities focusing on youth, with the aim to have an open and inclusive dialogue in regards to mental health,” says Klas Bergling, Tim’s father and co-founder of the Tim Bergling Foundation together with his wife Anki Lidén.

Getting exercise in and trying to eat healthy is what I hope everyone is able to do in the midst of all this. We are sending our love to everyone around the world.” said Colbie Caillat.
Justin Kawika Young continued, “We wrote Slow Down with Jamie Kenney and appropriately enough- it was a SLOW process. We started and bailed on three other song ideas and it was about 4 hours in before this song poked its head out. We wanted it to be a love song that could be applied to not only someone specific you love that helps you slow down and appreciate things, but also anything in life that encourages you to do that.”
Jason Reeves added, “We love the unique style of the animation for this video! It invokes the kind of surreal magic we hope this song expresses and it pulls you into an alternate world. Just like the way love pulls you into another realm: strange, beautiful and unknown.”
“We hope the fans that see this video will be inspired to take a deep breath and hold on tight to the people and memories they love as we are all in this moment together. A moment in time where the entire world has slowed down. Hopefully we can all reflect on what’s truly important and roll forward with that knowledge.” concluded Nelly Joy.
