JASON MRAZ CONTRIBUTES “WINTER WONDERLAND” TO A VERY SPECIAL CHRISTMAS SERIES BENEFITING SPECIAL OLYMPICS

“WINTER WONDERLAND” AVAILABLE ON ITUNES STARTING TODAY!
Grammy-winning singer/songwriter Jason Mraz is the latest in a stellar group of recording artists who have contributed a track to the A Very Special Christmas holiday music series benefiting Special Olympics, the world’s largest movement dedicated to fostering the acceptance and inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities. His recording of “Winter Wonderland” will be available on iTunes for the first time in the U.S. starting TODAY. The track will also be offered as a bonus to the purchase of 2009’s acclaimed A Very Special Christmas Volume 7, featuring young superstars Colbie Caillat, Carter Twins, Charice, Miley Cyrus, Kristinia DeBarge, Gloriana, Vanessa Hudgens, Sean Kingston, Leighton Meester, Mitchel Musso, Kellie Pickler, Ashley Tisdale and Carrie Underwood.
Mraz, who grew up listening to classic Christmas recordings by Bing Crosby, Perry Como and the like, remembers the A Very Special Christmas series. “I noticed the Keith Haring album covers when I first started buying cds, and I had them in my collection. Wanting to be an artist that contributes, I was touched that I was asked to take part.”For me Special Olympics is about embracing the abilities that we do have,” he explained. “It’s the same thing I do with my concerts. I just want to shift the attention back to love and joy and happiness in this now moment, and I really get that Special Olympics does that same thing.”

“We are so grateful to the many artists who have contributed to the success of this A Very Special Christmas series,” shared Tim Shriver, Special Olympics Chairman and CEO. “Not only has this music brought joy to the many listeners and fans, but it has brought hope to millions of athletes with intellectual disabilities throughout the world by providing them sports opportunities they never would have imagined.”

Launched in 1987, the A Very Special Christmas series has featured recordings of holiday music by some of the most influential and talented artists of the time including U2, Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, Madonna, Sting, Bon Jovi, Reba McIntyre, Sheryl Crow, Mary J. Blige, Eric Clapton and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Last year, the torch was passed to a new generation of superstar talent who contributed toA Very Special Christmas Volume 7, the latest edition of the acclaimed album series.

A Very Special Christmas was launched in 1987 when record executive/producer Jimmy Iovine decided that a Christmas album would be a beautiful memorial to his father. His wife Vicki suggested that the album benefit Special Olympics, for which she was working as a volunteer. Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss (the “A” and “M” of A&M Records) helped make the first A Very Special Christmas album possible with an advance and a commitment to handle the record without taking any royalties, and Bobby Shriver signed on as a producer. Keith Haring, one of the great artists of the 20th century, created the Madonna and child artwork that has appeared on every cover.

Selling one million copies in its first year, the premier album, A Very Special Christmas, and the subsequent albums in the series, have generated more than $l00 million for Special Olympics, the most ever raised by a benefit recording series. Disbursed in grants by the Special Olympics Christmas Records Trust, the monies raised each year by the albums/CDs/DVDs play a crucial role in the lives of the least-advantaged Special Olympics athletes in countries around the world where there are inaccurate and prejudiced views about people with intellectual disabilities. Executive Producer Bobby Shriver said last year, “If you look back 20-odd years, nothing else has generated as much money, had as much impact and made as much memorable music.”

Special Olympics founder Eunice Kennedy Shriver passed away last year, but her words about the artists on the first volume of A Very Special Christmas apply to Mraz and all the artists who have participated in the series. “I am full of admiration for the many artists who have helped us. It’s a great tribute that these men and women say to themselves, ‘I’ll use my talent to help others.’ It’s not easy because they’ve got so many demands on them and every charity wants them, but they’ve helped us, and I’m very grateful.”

THE SMASHING PUMPKINS ANNOUNCE NOVEMBER 23 AS THE STREET DATE FOR THEIR NEXT EP TEARGARDEN BY KALEIDYSCOPE VOL. II “THE SOLSTICE BARE”

SMASHING PUMPKINS PROGRAMA EL LANZAMIENTO DE SU NUEVO EP PARA EL 23 DE NOVIEMBRE
TEARGARDEN BY KALEIDYSCOPE VOL.II “THE SOLSTICE BARE” (El Solsticio Desnudo)

SMASHING PUMPINS lanzará TEARGARDEN BY KALEIDYSCOPE VOL.

TEARGARDEN BY KALEIDYSCOPE VOL.

THE SMASHING PUMPKINS
ANNOUNCE NOVEMBER 23 AS THE STREET DATE FOR THEIR NEXT EP
TEARGARDEN BY KALEIDYSCOPE VOL. II “THE SOLSTICE BARE”

THE SMASHING PUMPKINS will release TEARGARDEN BY KALEIDYSCOPE VOL. II “THE SOLSTICE BARE” on November 23 via Martha’s Music/Rocket Science Ventures.  This physical-only four-song EP is a limited-edition, beautifully packaged CD & deluxe 12-inch vinyl picture disc with the four songs: “The Fellowship”, “Freak”, “Tom Tom” and “Spangled” as well as an unreleased B-side track,“Cottonwood Symphony”. The lid covering the 12- inch box is a metallic/foil wallpaper motif, with a 1970’s design by The Flavor Paper Co.  As with the band’s EP TEARGARDEN BY KALEIDYSCOPE VOL. 1: SONGS FOR A SAILOR, which was released in May of this year, quantities are limited worldwide.

TEARGARDEN BY KALEIDYSCOPE VOL. II “THE SOLSTICE BARE” marks the second EP to emerge from the band’s in-progress 44-song project TEARGARDEN BY KALEIDYSCOPE, from which songs are being released online, one at a time for free (with four-song physical EPs being issued along the way).  Thus far, two singles have been released from VOL II: THE SOLSTICE BARE: the first single “Freak” is quickly ascending the U.S. Alternative radio charts. With a cumulative audience of over 20 million, “Freak”is receiving national airplay at the biggest Alternative rock stations in the country.   And the second release“Spangled”–described by Corgan quite simply as “just a pretty song”–is also earning critical attention.

Writing in The New York Times (7/27/10) about their July 26 sold-out show at Terminal 5 in NYC, Jon Pareles observed:

“Some of Mr. Corgan’s 21st-century songs, like the new ‘Freak’, aim their rage at sociopolitical targets; many of them revolve around blunter, simpler riffs than his 1990’s songs. And instead of recording for a major label and waiting to release a group of songs for an album, Smashing Pumpkins are now posting individual new songs free online. When there are 44 of them, they are to be packaged as a boxed-set album, Teargarden by Kaleidyscope.”

At SPIN.com (7/27/10), William Goodwin noted:

“…‘Freak’, another Teargarden track, was a union of pop-rock sensibility with heavy, distorted bass lines and lyrics that show Corgan can still be the romantic mouthpiece for disenfranchised youths. If ‘Freak’ was an indication, Pumpkins fans have something to look forward to.”

In touring news, the band–singer/guitarist BILLY CORGANguitarist JEFF SCHROEDERdrummer MIKE BYRNE and bassist NICOLE FIORENTINO–completed two runs of dates in the U.S. and shows in Asia, before heading down under for concerts in PerthAdelaideMelbourneSydney and Brisbane, followed by a concert in AucklandNew Zealand on October 19.  After a break, they’ll travel to South America in November for concerts in ArgentinaBrazilChilePeru and Colombia.

Los Angeles, November 2, 2010 – While brothers Mexia and Raul Antonio Hernandez, the sons of  Hernan Hernandez , (bassist and a vocalists of the acclaimed Los Tigres del Norte , whose music the The New Yorker described as “making the poor people they sing about feel powerful”)  share the same blood, they haven’t always shared the same musical taste. That all changed when it came time to speak-out against the injustice of Arizona’s Immigration Law SB 1070.  The musicians knew this was an issue in which they were united, and TODOS SOMOS ARIZONA, their powerful message of anger and solidarity which benefits MALDEF, was born.LINK TO SONG:  http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/todos-somos-arizona/id382188127

With its addictive beat and compelling narrative, TODOS SOMOS ARIZONA is a cross generational anthem in which the brothers delve deep into the illogical reasoning behind SB 1070.  “Arizona, que te pasa la raza es la razon that all you can chill at home without a care in your zone, we clean your home, cook your food while you sit on your thrown without a clue, Damn”

But Raul and Mexia wanted to do more than give voice to the fears of young Americans of Latino descent who are anxious about the future of their families – they wanted to take action.  They decided to give all proceeds from the sale of TODOS SOMOS ARIZONA to MALDEF (Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund) to support the legal battle against the radical law. MALDEF will feature the video to the song on their website and during special events such as this Thursday’s, November 4, tribute to Jose Jose.

“We wanted to make a song that reflected the frustration and struggle of our people,” Mexia says. “America is a country founded and built by immigrants, but immigration laws focused on Latinos have often changed depending on the labor needs of the country”. “This is our home country built on immigrant blood were all descendants and connected through love”, he writes in the song.

“My brother Mexia had already started working on a version of the song and he asked me to get on the hook,” says Raul, more known for romantic pop songs, from his studio in San Jose, California. “This law is affecting so many families including our own.”

Mexia’s music comes from a more street perceptive than his brother’s, and he says, “I miss the days when singers and rappers had a message in their music.  As artists, we have to be about making a difference as well as making a change.  But,” he adds, “we also need a track people could dance to so they would remember the message.”

The brothers have been interviewed by print and tv media, including respected broadcaster and journalist Jorge Ramos, spreading the message of Todos Somos Arizona. After having the song produced and crafted by the creative team The Iklectix, the next step was to recruit filmmaker Giovani Hidalgo to shoot a provocative video for the track. Hidalgo, who has directed videos for Ice Cube, combined a montage of news-clips, footage from recent protest and performance footage of Raul and Mexia. “We shot it guerrilla style in the streets of San Jose,” he says.  “Mexia is a seasoned performer, so filming his parts was a joy. The vibe on set was very cool.”

Mexia and Raul’s activism follows in the political footsteps of Los Tigres del Norte, and Todos Somos Arizona is the latest chapter of rap driven protests in Arizona. In 1991, the popular political rap group Public Enemy released their hit “By the Time I Get to Arizona,” which criticized the state for rejecting the federal holiday honoring Martin Luther King.  And last April, Public Enemy leader Chuck D. wrote an article inHuffington Post against SB 1070. “The Arizona immigration bill-is racist, deceitful, and reflects some of the most mean-spirited politics against immigrants that the country has ever seen”.

Soon after the SB 1070 was passed in April, President Obama said that the law ” threatened to undermine basic notions of fairness that we cherish as Americans.”  In addition, the Anglo and Latino celebrity community, including Ricky Martin, Lady Gaga, Eva Longoria and George Lopez, have all spoken out publicly against the law.

However, for the brothers, the true test of the success of the brother’s collaboration came when they bought their father into the studio to hear their efforts. “In my father’s group, he and his brothers also talk about the struggles of our people, so he was thrilled with the outcome of “Todos Somos Arizona”, Mexia explains in as good an explanation of ‘an apple doesn’t far from the tree’ as you’ll hear.

And to continue the familia homilies:  Blood is thicker than water. and the musical bond that was born through Mexia and Raul’s collaboration on Todos Somos Arizona has resulted in something more permanent (just like family!).  The brothers have decided to stick together for a while, and are currently in the studio in Mexico with famed producer, Toy Selectah working on a duo/group project as Raul y Mexia for early 2011.
