MICHAEL JACKSON ESTATE DONATES TO COVID-19 RELIEF EFFORTS

Broadway Cares, MusiCares and Three Square Food Bank in Nevada to Receive Funds

The Michael Jackson Estate is donating $300,000 to coronavirus response efforts to help three communities that have been severely impacted by the Covid-19 virus.

Broadway Cares, Three Square Food Bank (Southern Nevada’s largest hunger-relief organization) and MusiCares will each receive a $100,000 donation.

“This virus strikes at the heart of the communities we are close to. We learned today that the legendary Manu Dibango, (“Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin”) passed away from the virus.  Other performers and support staff in music and on Broadway are sick or have been left without work and are facing an uncertain future.   And in Las Vegas, which has been so welcoming to Michael Jackson, the entire city has been shut down leaving thousands of workers and their families devastated and without an income,” said John Branca and John McClain, co-executors of the Estate of Michael Jackson.

“Michael’s spirit of generosity and helping others during his lifetime is legendary.     These donations are inspired by him,” they concluded.

In New York, the Estate is answering the challenge made by more than 20 Broadway producers who are matching up to $1 million in donations, doubling the impact of contributions to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS’ COVID-19 Emergency Assistance Fund.    Jackson loved attending Broadway performances and the Estate and its partner, Lia Vollack Productions, continue to look forward to welcoming audiences to MJ the Musical later this year.

“With every passing day that theaters remain dark, entertainment and performing arts professionals face unprecedented and immediate challenges,” said Tom Viola, executive director Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. “This incredibly generous donation from the Michael Jackson Estate will help ensure those onstage, backstage and behind the scenes get lifesaving health care, emergency financial assistance and counseling during and after this crisis.”

In Las Vegas, the Estate’s donation will provide 300,000 meals to the needy, and help to maintain Three Square Food Bank’s supplies, the largest foodbank in Southern Nevada.  Since opening in February 2013, Michael Jackson ONE, produced by Cirque du Soleil and the Estate of Michael Jackson, has been one of the most popular shows in Vegas.  Before the pandemic, 1 in 8 Southern Nevadans lived in a food-insecure household and that number will increase exponentially with the displacement of thousands of workers in our community.  Thank you to the Estate of Michael Jackson for stepping up to help children, families, veterans and senior citizens who may need help now more than ever,” Michelle Beck, Chief Development Officer.

The Recording Academy and MusiCares will support the music makers who Michael Jackson worked with and loved in a time where the industry is being challenged at every level from the virus. MusiCares is very grateful for the outpouring of generosity we’ve seen from many in the music industry to grow the COVID-19 Relief Fund,” said Steve Boom, MusiCares Chair.  “The challenges that our industry is facing right now are enormous. It is contributions such as these that will help our community survive in this unprecedented time of tremendous need.”

THE ESTATE OF MICHAEL JACKSON AND BMI EXTEND LONG TERM

REPRESENTATION OF MICHAEL JACKSON’S SONGWRITING CATALOG

BMI (Broadcast Music Inc.) and The Estate of Michael Jackson announced today that they have inked a renewal agreement for BMI to continue to represent the performing rights in Michael Jackson’s songwriting catalog. This new deal continues an uninterrupted 41-year long relationship between the King of Pop and the performance rights organization which began in 1979 when Michael Jackson first signed with BMI. The Estate and BMI last renewed the deal in 2014.

“Michael first signed with BMI in the nascent stage of his solo career and BMI has never wavered in its commitment to his extraordinary talent. This is a significant agreement, commensurate with the robust growth of interest in his music and his enduring contribution to the culture,” said John Branca and John McClain, co-executors of the Estate of Michael Jackson.

“The influence of Michael Jackson’s revolutionary music is undeniable,” said Mike O’Neill, President & CEO, BMI. “We are extremely pleased that his estate continues to entrust BMI to represent his extraordinary catalog.”

Michael Jackson’s remarkable career scaled unparalleled musical, commercial and critical heights. As a songwriter, he penned more than 150 songs, with more than 20 reaching multi-million performance status. Michael’s compositions include some of the most iconic songs of all time: We Are the World; Billie Jean; Smooth Criminal; Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin; They Don’t Care About Us; Earth Song; Black or White; Bad; Love Never Felt So Good; Can You Feel It; Heal the World and more.

To illustrate the strength of Jackson’s vast repertoire, 17 of his songs have exceeded over one million plays on radio, with some exceeding five million spins. In total, these 17 songs alone have surpassed 30 million radio plays, an outstanding feat by any measure.

Michael’s music continues to thrill fans and inspire artists all over the world. At the end of last year, Michael’s albums held spots on ten of Billboard’s year end charts and on-demand streams of his music increased by 23%, outpacing the industry at large. With over 6.5 billion streams, he remains one of the most popular artists of all time.

GIN BLOSSOMS TO SUPPPORT BARENAKED LADIES ON 35 CITY TOUR

SEMINAL POP ALTERNATIVE BAND MARRIES “WORLD-WEARY LYRICS WITH EBULLIENT MELODIES” SAYS ROLLING STONE

Seminal pop/alternative rock band Gin Blossoms, whose hit tracks “Hey Jealousy”, “Follow You Down”, “Allison” and others, were ubiquitous on pop, rock and alternative radio in the 90s, will kick-off a 35-city tour beginning June 3 in St. Augustine Florida at the St. Agustina Amphitheatre supporting the Barenaked Ladies. Toad the Wet Sprocket opens the show. Artist pre-sale begins 1/23 at 10am local time, and public on-sale is 1/24 at 10am local time. For tickets and meet & greet package visit GinBlossoms.net/tour.

Gin Blossoms, wrote Rolling Stone in 2017, excel “at marrying world-weary lyrics with ebullient melodies.” Their songs remain a constant at radio today and the band continues to play them in concert at an astounding 110 shows per year.

The Gin Blossoms 1992 breakthrough “New Miserable Experience” sold over 5 million albums, was on the charts for almost three years and produced five hit singles that played on four radio formats.

Their Platinum follow-up Congratulations I’m Sorry came nearly three years later reached #10 on the U.S. album chart and produced two Top 10 singles, “Follow You Down” and “As Long as It Matters, which earned a Grammy nomination.  “Till I Hear it From You,” a Valenzuela/Wilson/Marshall Crenshaw co-write, which was the lead single on the Empire Records soundtrack, was appended to subsequent pressings of the album and was described by Billboard as “the closest thing to a perfect pop song to hit radio in recent memory”.

Their latest album, 2017’s Mixed Reality, shares the same timeless feel as New Miserable Experience; it’s packed with 15 songs, with Wilson, Leen, Johnson and Valenzuela all contributing material. And once again, the mix of songwriters results in something that has that unmistakable Gin Blossoms sound.

“We’re descendants of the Byrds, the Rolling Stones, Tom Petty and Cheap Trick,” says Wilson. “All of that is classic rock, and that’s who we are, too.”

Lead vocalist Robin Wilson said, “Our 1st high profile tour was with Toad in 92. This reunion has been a long time coming. BNL are great and music fans are gonna love this show. I’d like to challenge any musician on the tour to join me in hitting every skatepark we come near. That or a game of Soul Caliber or MARIO Cart. Looking forward. Rock Away.“

“Looking forward to being on the road with old pals BNL and Toad for a great summer!” said guitarist Jesse Valenzuela said.

AVICII’s ‘FADES AWAY’ SPECIAL CONCERT VERSION FEAT. MISHCATT AVAILABLE NOW

FADES AWAY IS A ‘POSITIVE SONG…A SIMPLE MESSAGE ABOUT ACCEPTING CHANGES, THE PASSING OF TIME…”, SAYS AVICII CO-WRITER JOAKIM BERG

“FADES AWAY’, the last track on AVICII: TIM, Tim Bergling’s posthumous album, came out of sessions with Tim, Carl Falk, Joe Janiak and Joakim Berg, the lead vocalist/writer for one of Sweden’s most successful rock band’s KENT. The original track featured Noonie Bao, but is being performed today in Stockholm at the Avicii Tribute Concert for Mental Health Awareness featuring MishCatt. A newly record version with MishCatt is available starting today HERE.

The track was written by Avicii (Tim Bergling) Carl Falk, Joakim Berg and Joe Janiak. Berg tells the story of the song coming together:

This was the first song that came out of the sessions with Tim, Carl Falk, Joe Janiak and me in the spring of 2018. Tim and Joe met for the first time this day, and Tim just loved Joe’s voice and vibe from the start.

We talked briefly about 60s & 70s bands and artists being quite comfortable working in pop but still having this otherworldly weirdness about their songs. How they made giant leaps in mood and feel within just one song.

This conversation unintentionally seeped into Fades Away.

Carl started toying around with a climbing chord sequence on a synth with a piano sound and Joe sang along with Tim directing the rhythm. That became the verse and the rest was very fast. I had some chords and the beginning of the melody to the fades away part before the drop and it has a very 60’s feel chord/melody-wise and is kind of weird but pretty. Tim and Joe finished the melody and came up with the words.

The drop part with the staccato strings was originally played by Joe and Carl on two acoustic guitars, Tim had the stacc melody down on keys and then he was making Carl play a super fast, very specific rhythm with hard accents that was really difficult to play but sounded quite amazing and was hilarious to watch.

Tim just loved the “don’t you love it, how it all just fades away” part of the lyric.

It may now come across as a sad song, but for us in the studio, writing it, we felt it was uplifting and light hearted.

We wrote it in a bright mode, sort of carefree, and there were lots of laughing and joking, so for me Fades Away will always be a positive song, a simple message about accepting changes, the passing of time and making the best of what you have.

– Joakim Berg

When Tim Bergling passed away on April 20, 2018, he was close to completing a new album. He left behind a collection of nearly finished songs, along with notes, email conversations and text messages about the music. The album AVICII: TIM was released in June to universal critical acclaim.

Concert goers in Sweden will see headline DJ sets from David Guetta, Kygo, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Laidback Luke and Nicky Romero, which are not part of the broadcast/streaming.

When the superstar artist and producer known to millions of fans around the world as Avicii but known to friends as Tim died on April 20, 2018 it sent a shockwave around the world, the global mourning an equal and opposite reaction to the Swedish producer’s intensely uplifting music and the reach it had during his comet streak of a career. Fans and fellow artists called him passionate, groundbreaking, the gold standard for timeless electronic music. At the Avicii Tribute Concert for Mental Health Awareness fans worldwide will come together with his collaborators to honor his music and legacy.

“We are grateful that his friends, producers, artists and colleagues are coming to Stockholm to help. They have all expressed a sincere interest and desire to engage in efforts to stem the tide of mental illness and lend their support to our work with the Tim Bergling Foundation. We are very much looking forward to this evening, which will be a starting point for the foundation’s work going forward.

“Every year around 1500 people take their own lives in Sweden and globally up to one million. It is a tragedy that affects families, communities and with long-term effects on relatives who live on in grief. It is a global crisis and the second most common cause of death among young people aged 15-29 *. We want this concert to help put the topic on the agenda and pay attention to the stigma surrounding mental illness and suicide. Policies and tools are needed to detect the risks and prevent suicide, especially among young people,” says Klas Bergling, Tim’s father.

ESTATE OF MICHAEL JACKSON AND SYLVESTER STEWART (SLY STONE) REACH AGREEMENT FOR MIJAC’S ACQUISITION OF SLY & THE FAMILY STONE CATALOG U.S. RIGHTS

“Thank You Mijac (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin),” says Sly Stone.

The Estate of Michael Jackson/MIJAC Music has reached agreement with Sylvester Stewart to acquire a majority ownership of the U.S. rights to the Sly and the Family Stone catalog and, as part of the arrangement, will retain long-term administration rights. The catalog includes classic songs like Family Affair, Dance to the Music, Everybody is a Star, Hot Fun in the Summertime and Everyday People, the first of their six #1 pop and R&B hits.  The Estate continues to own 100% of the copyright for the catalog outside the U.S.

Thank You Mijac (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin),” said the irrepressible Stewart at the signing of the agreement.

“Sly and the Family Stone were a force for enlightenment and positive change, a message that Michael believed in.  He recognized Stewart’s genius and the power of his words and music which is why he first acquired the catalog and why we at MIJAC follow in Michael’s footsteps today,” John Branca and John McClain, co-executors of the Estate of Michael Jackson.

MIJAC Music, one of the industry’s leading independent publishers, was created in 1980 by Michael Jackson as his personal publishing company. It has since become one of the most significant and valuable catalogs in music publishing and continues to actively pursue acquisitions of the copyrights of culture’s most important and enduring music. Michael’s first acquisition was for the catalog of Sly and the Family Stone in 1983, an early indicator of Michael’s astute business acumen.

Formed in 1966 in San Francisco, the seminal music of Sly & the Family Stone, led by acclaimed producer/songwriter Sly Stewart (professionally known as Sly Stone), fused funk, pop, soul, R&B and social accountability for a revolutionary sound that helped pioneer the emerging ‘psychedelic soul’ of the time. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, which inducted the band in 1993, wrote that “Their songs were more than danceable hits – they were a force for positive change.” Several of the songs are included in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll and the group’s influence can be heard in the music of Prince, George Clinton, Bruno Mars and others.

The MIJAC Music catalog includes all of the songs written by Jackson, including “Bad,” “Beat It,” “Billie Jean,” “Black or White,” “Can You Feel It,” “Dangerous,” “Dirty Diana,” “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough,” “Earth Song,” “Heal the World,” “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You,” “Jam,” Scream,” “Smooth Criminal,” “The Way You Make Me Feel,” “They Don’t Care About Us,” “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’” and “We Are the World” all of which remain permanent fixtures on the radio, in streaming, in films and more.

The catalog also includes some of the 20th century’s most important songs made famous by artists such as Ray Charles, Marvin Gaye, Elvis Presley and Aretha Franklin such as After Midnight, Ain’t No Stoppin Us Now,  Back Stabbers, Cryin’ in the Chapel, Ease on Down the Road, For the Love of Money, Goldfinger, Great Balls of Fire, Higher and Higher, I Got a Woman, I Never Loved a Man, Love Train, Mystery Train, Mr. Bojangles, People Get Ready, Runaround Sue, Shake Rattle and Roll, Sugar Sugar, What’d I Say, When A Man Loves a Woman, Year of the Cat, and more.

John Branca and Karen Langford, Ziffren Brittenham, represented MIJAC in the negotiation. David Dunn, of Shot Tower Capital, assisted.

Sylvester Stewart was represented in this transaction by Robert J. Allan, Brian Tinkham and Stella Yap of Allan Law Group P.C. and co-counsel, Robert A. Celestin of the Law Offices of Robert A. Celestin acting in consultation with Arlene Hirschkowitz, Sylvester Stewart’s manager.”
